What is Free Musician List?

Free Musician List is a self-service promotional tool.  You decide what is displayed. All you need is a valid email address.  It's an opportunity for musicians to mingle, find other musicians to jam with, be sought out by other musicians, list your bands so that other people can find them, showcase your music, read product reviews submitted by other musicians or submit your own, read tips submitted by other musicians or submit your own, and advertise or search for used equipment.  All this is free of charge.  This was a service that we felt was needed on the internet, at least in our area, and we decided to include the rest of the country as well.  It depends very heavily on word-of-mouth advertising (or your printing out the “business cards” to hand out to friends, relatives, music store clerks, and bar managers).  The more people you tell about it, the better selection you’ll have to choose from, and the more exposure your band will get.  We hope you have a good experience with Free Musician List, but either way, we want to hear from you.

Thanks,

JT

What is FML Jukebox?
Well...I'm glad you asked!  Come this way and I'll show you...(Click here)

What is your Privacy Policy?

Why can't I make a Musician or Band or any other type of entry?  It just stays on the front page.
Why can't I upload a song? It says my password didn't match, but I typed it in exactly right!
Can I use Free Musician List if I use AOL?
How do I make a Musician entry?
How do I make a "Musician Wanted" entry?
Do you require multiple members in order to be considered a band?
Why should I make a Band listing instead of just a Musician listing? I'm a single performer.
How do I make an entry for my band?
How do I delete my Musician (or Band) listing?
How do I sell my band's merchandise?
How do I get a PayPal account?
How do I advertise my instrument?
How do I update my gig or event listing?
How do I delete my gig or event listing?
How do I change the month when entering my gig or event listing?
The top of the calendar looks like << < April 29, 2004 > >>. The "<<" and ">>" change the year. The "<" and ">" change the month.

Why isn't there a Flyer button in my gig or event listing?
Either the band name that you entered for the gig doesn't match the band name you entered in your band listing, or you don't have a band listing.
To fix it, you can
  • delete the Event listing and re-enter it to make it match the Band listing,
  • delete the Band listing and re-enter it to make it match the Event listing, or
  • create a Band listing with the name that matches the band name in the Event listing. (Don't do this if you just mistyped it in the band listing, delete and re-enter the band listing.)

  • How do I activate my listing?
    First things first...
  • If you forgot your password or your verification code, then see the help entry for "How do I get my password or verification code?".
  • Click on the Update Listing button on the front page.
  • Choose the appropriate box (Musician Data, Band Data, etc.) and enter the requested information.
  • Click on the "Retrieve (Musician Info, Band Info, Open Mic Info, etc.)" button in that box.
  • When your information appears, it will look similar to the form where you first entered your information, but at the top will be a box labeled "Verification Code:".  This is where you will enter the verification code that was sent to you in your confirmation email or in the email you received when you requested your passwords (see How do I get my password or verification code?).
  • If you want to, you can also change some of the data that is shown.
  • Then click the Update button at the bottom of the page and you're done.

  • How do I get my password or verification code?
  • If you forgot your password or your verification code, then click the "Forget Your Password or Verification Code?" link on the bottom right of the front page.
  • Next, enter a name (so we know who's asking) and your email address.  The name isn't important, but the email address needs to be the one you used when you made your entry.
  • Then click the Request Passwords button and an email will be sent with all of the passwords and verification codes associated with that email address.

  • How do I upload a song?
  • If you don't have a band listing, then see the help entry for "How do I make an entry for my band?".
  • If you forgot your password or your verification code, then see the help entry for "How do I get my password or verification code?".
  • Next, click the Update Listing button on the front page.
  • Enter your band name in the Band Data box and enter your password.
  • Click the Retrieve Data button.
  • Click the Update button.
  • Click on the "Find a song and upload it" link
  • Search for the new song and select it.
  • Enter your password.
  • Enter the song length so that the song can be played properly in the jukebox.  Don't guess.  Time it for best results.
  • Wait a heck of a long time for the song to upload and wait for the Results to print below the line indicating success (or the reason that it failed).

When we have verified the song length, it will be added to the jukebox.  Please allow 24 hours for us to do this.  If you checked the "Make this the song shown in our Band Details page." checkbox, then it will be available for listening for free from your Band Details page.

  • How do I create an mp3 file?
It is a little different with each tool that you use. I use MusicMatch Jukebox version 8.0 to convert CDs to mp3s. They have a free version 9.0 at http://www.musicmatch.com/download/free/?OS=9x2k&MODE=input&DID=&OEM=MMD
    If starting with a CD:
  • Go to Options...Recorder...Settings.
  • Select the bit rate to record at, relative to the audio quality you desire or can tolerate. 128 kbps is CD quality sound. 64 kbps is FM radio quality sound.
  • Insert the CD into your CD drive.
  • Click on View...Recorder
  • Enter the appropriate values for Artist, Album, and the song names. You can optionally upload those to the CDDB (CD database) so that other people will have those available to them in the future.
  • Select the songs you want to record (convert) with the checkboxes.
  • Click the Record button (red dot).
  • If the file size is larger than 4 megabytes, it is too large to be uploaded to Free Musician List. Go back to the recorder settings, decrease the audio quality, and record it again. If you don't delete the first file, the next one will add info to the file name to distinguish it from the first. You can rename the file or delete the other one first.
  • You can additionally insert text info into the file by opening it in the MusicMatch Jukebox player and right-clicking on the file and clicking on the Edit Track Tags menu item.
Once you've done one or two, it's a breeze.

If starting with a wav file:
If you recorded your own song on your PC, depending on how it was recorded, you may have wound up with a very large .wav file. If so, you can easily convert it to an .mp3 file using MusicMatch Jukebox.
  • Click on File...Convert Files...
  • Find the Source Directory (where the .wav file is stored).
  • Find the Destination Directory (where you want the .mp3 file stored).
  • Select the Source Data Type (WAV).
  • Highlight the file you want to convert.
  • Select the Destination Data Type (MP3).
  • Use the slider to select the bit rate relative to the audio quality you desire or can tolerate (64 kbps is a good first try). 128 kbps is CD quality sound. 64 kbps is FM radio quality sound.
  • Click the Start button.

  • How do I change the song I have uploaded?
  • If you forgot your password or your verification code, then see the help entry for "How do I get my password or verification code?".
  • Next, click the Update Listing button on the front page.
  • Enter your band name in the Band Data box and enter your password.
  • Click the Retrieve Data button.
  • Changing the name of the song in your listing won't do any good because the song will still need to be uploaded.
  • Click the Update button.
  • Click on the "Find a song and upload it" link
  • Search for the new song and select it.
  • Enter your password.
  • Enter the song length so that the song can be played properly in the jukebox.  Don't guess.  Time it for best results.
  • Make sure that the "Make this the song shown in our Band Details page." checkbox is checked.
  • Wait a heck of a long time for the song to upload and wait for the Results to print below the line indicating success (or the reason that it failed).

  • How do I get featured on the front page?
The first thing you have to do is make a band entry.  See How do I make an entry for my band?  Then...
  • When you activate your listing, or when you update it, the page that shows you the information you've entered will have two links:
  • Either click on Find a Song and Upload It or Find a Photo and Upload It Uploading an original song or photo will make you eligible to be featured on the front page.  You will be put into the rotation of the bands to be featured on the front page.  When your turn comes around, you'll be featured.

  • How do I see how many page hits and song downloads I've gotten for my band?
At the moment, there is no easy way to see the count for a band's page. You can find out how many song plays they have by going through the site statistics. They are considered downloads. To do that,
  • Go to http://www.freemusicianlist.com:8282/_1010057827_/ and
  • Type in "FreeMusicianList" and click on the View Statistics button.
  • Click on the plus box next to "Pages by" and click on Downloads. You'll see the mp3 files that have been downloaded for a particular period.
    To increase the period,
  • Click on the plus box next to "Date Selection" and choose a date range.
  • Then you can click the Update Report button.
There's supposed to be a way to track the individual pages through Watches, but I haven't figured that out yet.

  • How do I stop Free Musician List from sending me special announcements?
  • Click on the Update Listing button on the front page.
  • Enter the requested information into the Musician Data box.
  • Click on the "Retrieve Musician Info" button in that box.
  • When your information appears, remove the check from the checkbox labeled "It's okay for Free Musician List to email me about special events or news."
  • Then click the Update button at the bottom of the page and you're done.  You will no longer get updates on the new features we add or special offers or events.

  • How do I make a purchase in the Free Musician List online store?

  • Simply click on the Online Store "Quick Link" to get to the store page.
  • Click on an item to get more information about it.
  • Select the options you want.
  • Enter the quantity you want (if you change the quantity, click the Get New Total button).
  • Add the item to your shopping cart by clicking in the Add to Cart button.
  • Either continue shopping, or click the View Cart button to see what is in your shopping cart.
  • When you're ready to purchase, click the View Cart button and click on the Start Checkout button.
  • Enter your shipping info, including your email address. If you NEED to pay by check, then click the Pay by check checkbox, and click the Submit button.
  • If paying by check, you'll see your shopping cart with a note advising you to print the invoice and to enter your order number on your check and indicating where to mail the check.
    -or-
  • If paying by credit card, you'll see your shopping cart and you can click on the Buy Now button to make your payment through PayPal. When you're through, you'll be returned to Free Musician List where you can print your invoice.

  • More help entries coming as they're requested...
